The Green Ray
Luís Lázaro Matos
This suite is part of Luís Lázaro Matos’ Yeti, the Joyful Hoax, a whimsical installation that invites guests into The Green Ray, one of its four fantastical universes. The walls are adorned with canvases featuring caricatured British military officers from the 18th and 19th centuries, their exaggerated expressions and details blending humor and historical commentary. This playful approach transforms the room into a surreal narrative space where art serves as both decor and dialogue, drawing viewers into Matos’ imaginative world.
The bathroom continues the story with bold contrasts of brown and orange, evoking the feel of a hidden cave guarding unseen treasures. As with the larger installation, this suite invites discovery and curiosity, urging visitors to figuratively say “abracadabra” and uncover what lies within. Yeti, the Joyful Hoax blurs the boundaries between art and experience, offering an immersive environment that is at once fantastical, mysterious, and delightfully unexpected.

Luís Lázaro Matos

Luís Lázaro Matos was born in Évora, Portugal, in 1987. He currently lives and works in Bruxelles. The art practice of Luis Lazaro Matos is mostly expressed through drawing, sculpture, animation and installation, inherently diluting the frontiers between disciplines such as design and fine art. Luis’ work often presents itself through architectural counter-proposals, reflecting his interest in drawing as a critical and satirical tool through which modernist and post-modernist utopian visions may be analyzed and reinterpreted.
