Conrad Shawcross
This suite is defined by Patterns of Absence, a captivating work by Conrad Shawcross, a key figure in the Magic Megève project. His influence extends throughout the chalet, from sculptural doors to bespoke lighting in the spa and skiroom, forming a unifying thread across the space. Shawcross’ sculptures delve into the interplay between geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. Inspired by obsolete scientific theories and the remnants of failed quests for knowledge, he creates intricate mechanical and structural montages on an ambitious scale. These enigmatic forms, blending diverse materials and media, evoke both wonder and paradox, drawing connections to natural forces and technologies.
The centerpiece, Patterns of Absence, exemplifies Shawcross’ exploration of optics and perception. Comprised of two perforated, colored disks, the artwork employs a mechanical system to rotate the disks incrementally, generating optical interference that engages the viewer’s visual receptors. This dynamic interplay of light and motion evokes natural phenomena such as shifting waves, twisting vortices, or murmuring starlings. Complementing this, Hania Farrell’s My Aura in the Sun and Jorge Pardo’s contributions harmonize with Shawcross’ work, enriching the space with abstract reflections on emotion and perception. Together, these artworks transform the suite into a meditative sanctuary, inspiring renewal and introspection.

Different technologies and natural forces inspire his forms, but his mysterious machines and structures remain enigmatic, filled with paradox and wonder. Shawcross is the youngest living member of the Royal Academy of Arts.
